Bike share pioneers nextbike today joined forces to offer 100 free memberships to NHS staff at Hillingdon Hospital as they battle the coronavirus pandemic.
Nextbike, which was launched in 2004 and now has more than 200 schemes around the world, teamed up with Brunel University, Velocity Transport Planners and the Easit network to provide the offering as the nation tackles the coronavirus pandemic.
Staff at Hillingdon Hospital have been at the forefront of patient care in recent days, with death tolls rising. The healthcare provider has been taking action to stop the spread of coronavirus, and announced the closure of the minor injuries unit (MIU) at Mount Vernon hospital in Northwood on Monday.
The bike share initiative will allow essential workers to get to and from work without using public transport during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, as well as keep the fleet on the road for regular users looking to keep fit during the lockdown.
It follows a similar scheme in Scotland where key-workers across the Forth Valley were offered access to nextbike’s fleet.
Sam Coldham, business development manager for nextbike, said: "Nextbike is delighted to be able to step in and provide key NHS workers at Hillingdon Hospital with a risk-free and healthy way to get to work during these times of crisis.
“Cycling is the perfect self-distancing way of moving around during the pandemic. Hopefully, by offering key workers the chance to take a free nextbike instead of having to use public transport, we will be helping to minimise the risks to their health – so they can continue to look after those who need their help most."
